Part 5: Self Discovery Series

by Jagad Guru Siddhaswarupananda Paramahamsa

Many people have been asked the question, “Who are you?” For example, we fill out various forms as we go through life according to gender, age, race, etc. We are asked to answer questions about who we are based on bodily identification; based on material labels.

The problem with this is that we are not really our bodies. How we answer questions about ourselves will depend on who we identify ourselves as. Asking, “Who am I?” “What is my essence?” is the very beginning of self-realization.

We can understand that we exist today and that we existed seven years ago. Yet the body that we have today is not the body that we had seven years ago. That body is long gone.

Research shows that every cell of the body is undergoing constant change. Though it may not be apparent to the eye, every part of your body is undergoing molecular change. So if the body is always changing, who are you?

Some people believe that they are the brain, because the brain cells don’t change. However although the brain cells may not reproduce, still every single molecule in the brain is changing. In fact, the molecular change in the brain cells appears to be faster than in any other part of the body.
