Part 6: Self Discovery Series

Transcript:

The macromolecular composition of the cells in your body is completely changed every three days. This raises many interesting questions: how do we remember things? Many people identify themselves as their brains – yet they need to understand that although every molecule in the brain is different, they are still the same person. The body is constantly changing.

A person may believe that they are their body, but the truth is they existed seven years ago and they exist now; yet the body they had seven years ago is completely gone. Most people understand this change from a different angle -- they may look at an old photograph of themselves and they can see the difference.

Someone may have been a beauty queen in their youth and now they are living in an old age home – the body is old and wrinkled. Yet the person is the same. The person existed then and the person exists now. But the body that that person had fifty years ago is long gone.

This is one way to appreciate that the material body cannot be considered the self. The body is not the self because the self is constant but the body is not.
